Overview
API 579-1/ASME FFS-1 is a globally recognized standard that provides structured assessment procedures to evaluate the fitness-for-service (FFS) of in-service equipment in the oil & gas, petrochemical, and chemical industries. Jointly developed by the American Petroleum Institute (API) and ASME, this standard enables operators to determine whether pressure vessels, piping, and storage tanks can safely remain in operation, be rerated, or require repair or replacement.

API 579-1/ASME FFS-1 covers a wide range of damage mechanisms and degradation modes, including:
General and local metal loss
Pitting corrosion
Brittle fracture
Crack-like flaws
Creep damage
Blisters and laminations
Weld misalignment and distortion
Fire and thermal damage
These assessments are applicable to components fabricated under ASME BPVC, ASME B31.3, API 650, API 620, and other internationally accepted design codes.
The standard outlines three assessment levels (Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3) based on the complexity and accuracy needed:
Level 1: Quick screening using conservative assumptions
Level 2: Intermediate assessment with simplified engineering calculations
Level 3: Detailed analysis using finite element analysis and fracture mechanics
FFS assessments help evaluate:
Present structural integrity
Remaining life estimation
Suitability for rerating
Risk-based inspection planning
These are essential for asset integrity management, avoiding unnecessary shutdowns, and optimizing maintenance costs.
At AITECH, we provide comprehensive FFS evaluations and rerating services in compliance with API 579-1/ASME FFS-1. Our certified engineers use advanced techniques and proprietary tools to ensure your equipment continues to operate safely and reliably.
