Internal Rotary Inspection System (IRIS) Testing Services by AITECH

Introduction to IRIS Testing

The Internal Rotary Inspection System (IRIS) is a high-resolution ultrasonic testing method specifically designed for evaluating the wall thickness and corrosion levels of tubes in heat exchangers, boilers, and other industrial piping systems. AITECH provides state-of-the-art IRIS inspection services to ensure the safety and integrity of your pressure equipment.

How Does IRIS Work?

IRIS is an ultrasonic-based inspection technique that utilizes water as a coupling medium. The process involves the following key steps:

  1. Preparation and Water Coupling:
The inside of the tube is filled with water to act as a medium for ultrasonic waves.

  2. Ultrasonic Pulse Generation:
An ultrasonic probe emits sound waves along the axis of the tube. A rotating mirror inside the probe redirects the waves at 90° towards the tube wall.

  3. Echo Reflection and Data Collection:

    • The sound waves reflect back from the Inner Diameter (ID) and Outer Diameter (OD) of the tube.

    • The time difference between the echoes from the ID and OD is measured to calculate the tube wall thickness.

  4. 360° Rotational Scanning:
The mirror rotates at 50 revolutions per second, enabling a full 360° scan of the tube's surface, ensuring no defect is left undetected.

  5. Data Analysis and Reporting:
The collected data is processed and analyzed to detect corrosion, pitting, and wall thinning. A complete inspection report is generated for maintenance and safety planning.

Applications of IRIS Testing

IRIS Testing is ideal for:

  • Heat Exchangers: Identifying wall thinning and corrosion in tube bundles.

  • Boiler Tubes: Ensuring safe operation by evaluating thickness loss and corrosion.

  • Industrial Piping Systems: Detecting internal corrosion and wear in critical piping.

  • Oil & Gas Pipelines: Preventing leaks and maintaining structural integrity.

Advantages of IRIS Testing

AdvantagesDescription
High AccuracyProvides precise wall thickness measurements with minimal error.
Corrosion and Pitting DetectionDetects both internal and external corrosion as well as pitting damage.
Non-Invasive InspectionNo need to cut or damage the tubes during inspection.
Full 360° CoverageRotating mirror allows for complete scanning of the tube’s surface.
Data Storage and AnalysisAll data is stored for historical analysis and maintenance planning.
Adaptable to Various MaterialsSuitable for carbon steel, stainless steel, copper, and aluminum tubing.
