STEEL BALL EDDY CURRENT TESTING – HIGH-PRECISION DEFECT DETECTION FOR PRECISION INDUSTRIES

EDDY CURRENT TESTING (ECT) SERVICE – AITECH

1. Introduction

Eddy Current Testing (ECT) is a non-destructive testing method that uses electromagnetic induction to detect surface and near-surface defects in conductive materials. At AITECH, we employ AVIKO 4080 G2 machine to conduct 100% inspection of steel balls used in wind energy, precision machinery, and automotive industries.

2. Working Principle

An alternating current is applied to the probe to generate a magnetic field. When the probe is placed near a metallic surface, eddy currents are induced. Defects disrupt the current flow, resulting in a change in electrical impedance, which is recorded and analyzed.

3. Our Testing Procedure

???? Step 1: Preparation

  • Balls are demagnetized (<1 Gauss)

  • Testing room controlled at 18°C to 28°C, dust-free and free of direct sunlight

  • Clean surfaces are mandatory

???? Step 2: Equipment Calibration

  • Use certified Master Balls with artificial defects for sensitivity setup

  • Adjust frequency, phase angle, and gain for each ECT channel

  • Calibration check performed every 4 hours or per batch

???? Step 3: Inspection

  • Steel balls pass through AVIKO’s high-speed ECT sensors

  • Automatic classification:

    • Acceptable (OK)

    • Reworkable (repair and retest once)

    • Rejected (NG)

???? Step 4: NG Ball Handling

  • NG balls undergo Macro Test using hydrochloric acid

  • If cracks or metallurgical defects are found, balls are scrapped

4. Equipment & Technology

  • AVIKO 4080 G2 – EN 15548 compliant

  • Multi-frequency ECT Sensors (150–3600 kHz, standard at 400 kHz)

  • 2-core and 4-core ferrite probes available

  • EMT software allows phase angle and gain adjustments

5. Standards Followed

  • SNT-TC-1A (2024 Edition) – Personnel qualification

  • EN 15549, EN 15548-1/2/3 – ECT system performance and compliance

  • P3C-WE-0014 – Bearing processing requirements

  • AITECH-NDT-WP-001 – Internal written practice for certification

6. Applications

  • Steel balls for wind turbine bearings

  • Components for precision machinery

  • Balls and parts in automotive and aerospace sectors

  • Round or spherical conductive parts

7. AITECH’s Quality Commitment

  • Technicians certified to Level II
